Two questions worth answering

The first is simple: attended divided by total held, times 100. The second is the one that actually matters, and it works in two directions. If you are above the threshold, how many more classes can you miss before dropping below it? If you are below, how many consecutive classes must you attend to climb back? The second is unforgiving, because every additional class raises the denominator as well as the numerator.

Recovery is harder than it looks

Suppose you have attended 30 of 50 classes, so 60 percent, and need 75 percent. Attending the next 20 straight gives 50 out of 70, which is 71.4 percent, still short. You would need 30 consecutive classes to reach 60 of 80, which is 75 percent. Missing a single one during that run resets the arithmetic. This is why attendance problems compound quickly and why the deficit should be addressed early rather than at the end of term.

Check what counts as total

The denominator is usually classes actually held, not classes scheduled, so cancelled sessions typically do not count against you. Some institutions calculate per subject and some aggregate across all subjects, and the difference matters enormously if your absences are concentrated in one course. Medical and institutional leave may be exempt but usually requires documentation submitted within a deadline.

Consequences vary

The common threshold is 75 percent, with 65 percent as a condonable floor in some systems on payment of a fee or with a medical certificate. Consequences range from a fine to being barred from the examination, which in most institutions means repeating the entire subject. Check the specific regulation rather than assuming, because the shortfall is easier to fix than the outcome.

Track it weekly

Attendance is one of the few academic problems that is entirely visible in advance. Checking the percentage weekly turns a term-end crisis into a series of small decisions, because you can see exactly how much margin remains before any single absence becomes expensive.
