Most weak essays are structurally weak, not badly written
Sentence-level polish rarely rescues an essay whose argument does not hold together. The common failures are structural and visible before a word of prose is written: a thesis that states a topic rather than a claim, body paragraphs that restate the thesis instead of advancing it, evidence attached to no particular point, and no acknowledgement that a reasonable person might disagree. An outline surfaces all four while they are still cheap to fix.
A thesis has to be contestable
"Social media affects teenagers" is a subject, not a thesis, because nobody would argue the reverse. "Social media harms teenagers more than television harmed the previous generation" is a thesis, because it can be denied and therefore has to be defended. The test is simple: write the opposite sentence, and if it sounds absurd rather than arguable, the thesis is not doing work.
Word budgets stop the shape drifting
Essays usually run long in the section the writer found most interesting and short in the section carrying the most weight. Assigning a word budget per paragraph before drafting makes that drift visible early. The budgets here are proportional: introduction and conclusion take roughly a tenth each, and the remainder divides across body paragraphs, weighted so that a point with more evidence gets more room.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a thesis contestable?
Write the opposite sentence. If it sounds absurd rather than arguable, the original is a topic rather than a claim, and there is nothing to defend.
Why plan the counter-argument?
Because an essay that never acknowledges a reasonable objection reads as though the writer has not considered one. Addressing the strongest objection rather than a weak version is what makes the argument credible.
How are the word budgets calculated?
Introduction and conclusion take roughly a tenth of the total each, and the remainder divides across body paragraphs weighted by how much evidence each point carries.
Should every point have evidence?
Every point that is contestable needs it, and the tool flags points listed without any. A point nobody would dispute does not need support, but it usually does not need a paragraph either.
Does the order of points matter?
Yes. Strongest point last is the usual advice for persuasive essays, since recency effects favour it, while analytical essays more often build in logical rather than rhetorical order.
