There is no universal formula

The widely circulated method of multiplying CGPA by 9.5 comes from CBSE and applies to CBSE Class 10 results specifically. It was derived from the relationship between grade points and marks in that particular system. Applying it to an engineering degree from a different university produces a number with no official standing, which admissions offices and employers may reject.

Universities publish their own conversion. Some multiply by 10, some by 9.5, some subtract a constant such as CGPA times 10 minus 7.5, and many use a piecewise table rather than a formula. VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University and most autonomous institutions each differ. Check your own institution's regulations before using any figure.

Ask the receiving organisation what they want

Many universities abroad and many employers prefer the CGPA as awarded, on its stated scale, rather than a converted percentage. Converting when it was not requested can look like an attempt to inflate. Where a percentage is required, most institutions will issue an official conversion certificate, and that document carries weight a self-calculated figure does not.

Scale matters

A CGPA out of 10 and one out of 4 are not comparable and no simple multiplier bridges them. US GPA on a 4-point scale maps to percentage differently again, and services such as WES apply their own methodology that frequently disagrees with a naive conversion. If applying internationally, use the evaluation service the institution names.

Rounding

Small differences matter at eligibility thresholds. A cutoff at 60 percent means 59.8 fails, and whether your CGPA of 6.3 converts to 59.85 or 60.0 depends entirely on which formula is applied. Where you are near a boundary, obtain the official conversion rather than relying on a calculated estimate.
