Measure your reading speed
Reading speed is measured in words per minute, and this calculator works it out from the number of words you read and the time it took. Divide the word count by the time in minutes to get the words-per-minute rate. Reading 900 words in three and a half minutes gives about 257 words per minute, a typical adult pace. The calculator also categorises your speed, from below average through to speed-reader levels, so you can see where you stand.
To use it, time yourself reading a passage of known length, then enter the figures.
Reading speed benchmarks
The average adult reads silently at around 200 to 250 words per minute, with comprehension. Skilled readers reach 300 or more, and trained speed readers go far higher, though comprehension can suffer at extreme speeds. Measuring your rate is the first step to improving it, and tracking it over time shows progress as you practise techniques like reducing subvocalisation and widening your eye span.
Speed is only half the story: reading faster is only useful if you still understand and retain the material, so pair speed measurements with comprehension checks. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is reading speed calculated?
Divide the number of words read by the time taken in minutes to get your reading speed in words per minute.
What is an average reading speed?
Most adults read silently at around 200 to 250 words per minute with good comprehension.
How do I measure it accurately?
Time yourself reading a passage whose word count you know, then enter the words and the exact time, including seconds.
Is faster reading always better?
Only if comprehension holds. Very high speeds can reduce understanding, so balance speed with how much you retain.
How can I read faster?
Techniques include reducing subvocalisation, avoiding re-reading, and widening the span of text your eyes take in per fixation, with practice.
