Fit a line to your data
Linear regression finds the straight line that best fits a set of x-y data points, summarising a relationship in a slope and an intercept. This calculator fits a simple linear regression from CSV pairs and outputs the slope, intercept and R-squared, so you can quantify a trend in your data.
What the outputs tell you
The slope says how much y changes for each unit of x, the intercept says where the line crosses, and R-squared, between zero and one, says how well the line actually fits: near one means the points cluster tightly on the line, near zero means the line explains little. That last number is crucial, because a slope means nothing if the fit is poor. A line can always be drawn; whether it describes the data is what R-squared tells you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does linear regression do?
It finds the straight line that best fits a set of x-y points, summarising their relationship as a slope and an intercept.
What is R-squared?
A measure between zero and one of how well the line fits: near one means the points cluster tightly on the line, near zero means the line explains little.
Why does R-squared matter?
Because a slope is meaningless if the fit is poor. A line can always be drawn; R-squared tells you whether it actually describes the data.
What does the slope mean?
How much the y value changes for each one-unit increase in x, which quantifies the direction and strength of the trend.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
