Turn an image into text art

ASCII art represents a picture using text characters of different visual weights, and this generator converts any image into that text-art form instantly and entirely in your browser. It samples the brightness across the image and maps light and dark areas to different characters, producing recognisable art you can paste anywhere that plain text is accepted, from a code comment to a chat message. It is a small piece of retro computing that still delights.

How brightness becomes characters

The technique works because some characters visually cover more of their allotted space than others: a dense character like a solid block reads as dark, while a sparse one like a full stop reads as light. The generator chooses a character for each small region of the image based on how bright that region is, so the overall pattern of characters faithfully reproduces the light and dark of the original picture. High-contrast images with clear, bold shapes convert most recognisably, while subtle low-contrast photos tend to come out muddier and harder to read.

Text you can paste anywhere

Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded and the tool works offline once the page has loaded. There is no account and no server involved in producing the result, which is why it responds instantly every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an image become text?

Each region is replaced by a character whose visual density matches the brightness there, so dark areas get dense characters and light areas get sparse ones.

Which images work best?

High-contrast images with clear shapes, since the character mapping reproduces light and dark. Subtle, low-contrast photos come out muddier.

Where can I use ASCII art?

Anywhere plain text is accepted: comments, messages, code files and terminals, which is the appeal, since a picture cannot go there.

Can I adjust the size?

The output width controls detail: a wider output samples the image more finely at the cost of a larger block of text.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
