Classify your data assets
Not all data needs the same protection, and classifying it into sensitivity levels is the foundation of sensible, proportionate security. This tool helps you classify data assets into standard levels, Public, Internal, Confidential and Restricted, so the protection each asset receives matches how sensitive it actually is rather than being applied uniformly and wastefully.
Why classification underpins security
Applying the same protection to everything is either wasteful, over-protecting genuinely public data at unnecessary cost, or outright dangerous, under-protecting your most sensitive data. Classification sorts data into levels so that each one receives protection proportionate to its sensitivity: public data needs very little, restricted data needs the strongest controls you have. This is the essential foundation on which access controls, encryption decisions and retention rules all rest, because you cannot possibly protect data appropriately until you first know how sensitive each piece of it actually is. Classifying assets is therefore a prerequisite for almost every other data-security control you might implement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the classification levels?
Commonly Public, Internal, Confidential and Restricted, in increasing order of sensitivity, so each level gets protection proportionate to its risk.
Why classify data?
Because protecting everything equally is either wasteful or dangerous. Classification lets each level get protection matched to its sensitivity.
What does classification enable?
Sensible access controls, encryption and retention decisions, all of which depend on knowing how sensitive each piece of data is.
Who should do the classification?
Typically the data owners who understand the data’s sensitivity, guided by clear level definitions like those the tool provides.
Is my input uploaded?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser.
