Calculate the data purge date
Data protection laws require personal data to be kept only for as long as necessary, so organisations set retention periods after which data must be deleted. This calculator works out the purge date from the date the data was collected and the retention period you specify in days, months or years. Data collected on the fifteenth of January 2025 under a twenty-four-month retention policy must be deleted by the fifteenth of January 2027.
The calculation handles month and year arithmetic correctly, clamping to the last valid day when a month is shorter.
Enforcing retention policies
Keeping personal data longer than needed increases privacy risk and can breach regulations such as the GDPR, which enshrines storage limitation as a core principle. Calculating a clear purge date for each dataset or record lets you schedule deletion and demonstrate compliance. The days-remaining figure flags data that is due for deletion soon or already overdue.
Retention periods vary by data type and legal requirement, so apply the correct period for each category. All calculation happens locally in your browser.
Important note
Because the data retention purge date calculator runs entirely in your browser, nothing you enter is uploaded, so you can use it with your own details safely. The output is a general template or estimate, not legal advice, so review it carefully and have it checked by a qualified professional before relying on it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the purge date calculated?
It adds the retention period, in days, months or years, to the collection date, giving the date by which the data must be deleted.
Why delete data after a retention period?
Privacy laws require keeping personal data only as long as necessary, so a defined purge date enforces storage limitation and reduces risk.
How are month lengths handled?
Month and year arithmetic clamps to the last valid day, so a date that does not exist in a shorter month rolls back to the month end.
Do all data types have the same retention?
No. Retention periods vary by data category and legal requirement, so apply the correct period for each type of data you hold.
