Generate a copyright notice

A copyright notice identifies the owner of a work and the year it was created, signalling that the content is protected. This generator produces a correctly formatted notice with the copyright symbol, the year or a year range, the owner name and an optional rights-reserved statement. When you enter a starting year earlier than the current year, it creates a range, such as 2020 to the present, which is the common convention for sites updated over time. It also provides the HTML entity version for web pages.

Although a notice is not strictly required for copyright to exist, it is strongly recommended.

Why display a copyright notice

Copyright protection arises automatically when an original work is created, but a visible notice has practical value: it identifies the owner, deters casual copying, and can be relevant if infringement is pursued. A year range shows the span over which the content has been produced or updated. Placing the notice in the footer of every page is standard practice for websites.

This generator produces the notice text; it does not register copyright, which is a separate process in some jurisdictions. All generation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a copyright notice?

Copyright exists automatically without one, but a notice is recommended because it identifies the owner, deters copying and can help if you pursue infringement.

Why use a year range?

A range, such as 2020 to the present, shows the span over which the content has been created or updated, which suits sites maintained over time.

Does this register my copyright?

No. It generates the notice text only. Formal registration, where available, is a separate process handled by a copyright office.

Where should the notice go?

Commonly in the footer of every page of a website, so the ownership statement appears consistently across the whole site.
