Generate a Kubernetes ConfigMap

A ConfigMap holds non-sensitive configuration data for your Kubernetes applications, such as log levels, feature flags and connection limits, keeping configuration separate from container images. This generator builds a complete ConfigMap manifest from simple key=value lines. You give it a name, a namespace and your configuration pairs, and it produces ready-to-apply YAML with each value quoted so strings and numbers are handled consistently.

Unlike Secrets, ConfigMap values are stored in plain text, which is appropriate for non-sensitive settings.

Externalising configuration

Storing configuration in ConfigMaps rather than hard-coding it in images follows the twelve-factor principle of keeping config in the environment. The same image can then run in development, staging and production with different ConfigMaps, and you can change settings without rebuilding. Values can be injected as environment variables or mounted as configuration files inside pods.

Use a ConfigMap for anything that is not secret, and reserve Secrets for passwords and keys. Review the generated manifest and apply it to your cluster. All generation happens locally in your browser.

Notes on the output

Because the kubernetes configmap generator runs entirely in your browser, you can adjust every option and see the generated output update instantly, with nothing uploaded and no sign-up needed. The result is clean, standard configuration you can paste straight into your project and refine by hand, and because the processing is local, even sensitive values stay private on your own machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ConfigMap for?

It stores non-sensitive configuration such as log levels and feature flags, keeping settings out of your container images.

How is it different from a Secret?

ConfigMaps hold plain-text, non-sensitive data, while Secrets hold base64-encoded sensitive data like passwords and should be protected.

How do pods use a ConfigMap?

They can read values as environment variables with configMapKeyRef, or mount the whole ConfigMap as files via a volume.

Can the same image use different configs?

Yes. That is the point: one image runs in each environment with a different ConfigMap, so you change config without rebuilding.
