Generate an SSH config entry

The SSH client config file, usually at ~/.ssh/config, lets you define named shortcuts for the servers you connect to, so you can type a short alias instead of a long command. This generator creates a config entry from a host alias, the real hostname or IP, the username, the port and the path to your private key. With it in place, connecting is as simple as ssh myserver, with all the connection details remembered.

It also adds a keep-alive setting that helps prevent idle connections from dropping.

Simpler, safer SSH

Managing many servers through the SSH config file is far more convenient and less error-prone than remembering full connection commands. It also makes advanced setups easy, such as using different keys per host, jumping through bastion hosts, and setting per-host options. Keeping these details in one organised file means tools like scp, rsync and git over SSH can use the same aliases.

Place the generated block in your ~/.ssh/config file, and ensure the file permissions are restricted to your user. Review the details before saving. All generation happens locally in your browser.

Notes on the output

Because the ssh config generator runs entirely in your browser, you can adjust every option and see the generated output update instantly, with nothing uploaded and no sign-up needed. The result is clean, standard configuration you can paste straight into your project and refine by hand, and because the processing is local, even sensitive values stay private on your own machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the SSH config go?

In the file at ~/.ssh/config on your machine. Each Host block defines an alias and its connection settings.

How do I connect using the alias?

Just run ssh followed by the alias, such as ssh myserver, and the client uses the hostname, user, port and key from the config.

Why specify an IdentityFile?

It tells SSH exactly which private key to use for the host, which is essential when you have different keys for different servers.

What does ServerAliveInterval do?

It sends a periodic keep-alive so idle connections are less likely to be dropped by firewalls or the server.
