Convert between data size units
Digital storage is measured in bits and bytes and their multiples, but there are two competing systems of prefixes that are easy to confuse. Decimal units treat a kilobyte as one thousand bytes, which is how storage manufacturers and network speeds are quoted. Binary units treat a kibibyte as one thousand twenty-four bytes, which is how operating systems usually report memory and file sizes. This converter shows your value in both systems at once, so you can see exactly how a figure in gigabytes compares to the same figure in gibibytes.
Enter any value from bits up to terabytes, in either the decimal or binary family, and the tool fills in every other unit.
Why the two systems matter
The decimal-versus-binary difference is the reason a "one terabyte" drive shows as about 931 gibibytes in your operating system: the drive maker counts in decimal terabytes while the computer counts in binary. Understanding this avoids confusion when comparing advertised capacity with reported free space, and when converting between file sizes and transfer speeds.
Bits, one eighth of a byte, are included because network and some storage figures are quoted in bits. Keeping the units straight prevents the factor-of-eight and factor-of-1024 mistakes that commonly trip people up. All conversion happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
A kilobyte (KB) is 1000 bytes in the decimal system, while a kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes in the binary system used by operating systems.
Why does my 1 TB drive show less space?
Drive makers count a terabyte as a trillion bytes, but the operating system counts in binary, so one decimal terabyte is about 931 binary gibibytes.
How many bits are in a byte?
There are eight bits in a byte. The converter includes bits because network speeds and some data figures are measured in bits rather than bytes.
Which system should I use?
Use decimal units for storage capacity and network speeds, and binary units when matching how an operating system reports memory and file sizes.
Does it handle very large or small values?
Yes. You can enter any non-negative value, and the tool converts it across all units from bits up to terabytes and tebibytes.
