Convert IPv4 addresses to integers

Every IPv4 address is really a 32-bit number written in the familiar dotted-decimal form. This converter translates between the two representations. Given an address such as 192.168.1.1 it produces the single decimal integer 3232235777, along with the hexadecimal and binary equivalents, and given an integer it reconstructs the dotted address. The conversion multiplies each octet by its place value: the first octet by sixteen million, the second by sixty-five thousand, the third by two hundred fifty-six, and the last by one.

The binary view shows all thirty-two bits grouped into four octets, which makes the structure of the address and its network boundaries easy to see.

Why convert IPs to integers

Databases and programs often store IP addresses as integers because comparing and sorting numbers is faster and uses less space than comparing strings. Representing an address as a single number also makes it simple to calculate ranges, test whether one address falls between two others, and perform the bitwise operations that underlie subnetting.

Developers use integer conversion when building geolocation lookups, access-control lists and logging systems. The hexadecimal form appears in packet captures and low-level networking. All conversion happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an IP converted to an integer?

Each of the four octets is multiplied by its place value and the results are added, giving a single number between 0 and 4294967295.

What is the largest possible value?

The maximum is 4294967295, which corresponds to 255.255.255.255, the highest IPv4 address. The smallest is 0 for 0.0.0.0.

Can I convert an integer back to an IP?

Yes. Enter a decimal or hexadecimal integer in the second box and the tool reconstructs the dotted-decimal address.

Why do databases store IPs as integers?

Integers are faster to compare, sort and index than text, and they make range checks and subnet calculations simple arithmetic.

Does this work for IPv6?

This tool handles IPv4, which fits in 32 bits. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits and need a dedicated converter.
