Convert IPv4 addresses to hexadecimal

IPv4 addresses often appear in hexadecimal form in packet captures, log files, firmware and low-level code, where the thirty-two bits are written as eight hex digits. This converter translates both ways. Given a dotted address such as 192.168.0.1 it produces the packed hex value C0A80001 and a dotted hex form, and given a hex value it reconstructs the familiar dotted-decimal address.

Each octet corresponds to two hex digits, so the dotted hex form lines up neatly with the decimal octets, making it easy to see which part of the hex string maps to which part of the address.

Where hex IPs appear

Developers and network analysts encounter hexadecimal addresses when reading raw packet data, debugging network drivers, or interpreting log formats that store addresses compactly. Some URLs and configuration files also accept addresses in hexadecimal. Being able to convert quickly between the two forms saves time and prevents misreading.

The packed form is a single eight-digit value convenient for programs, while the dotted hex form keeps the octet boundaries visible for humans. All conversion happens locally in your browser, with no data sent anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an IP written in hexadecimal?

Each of the four octets becomes two hex digits, so 192.168.0.1 becomes C0A80001, or C0.A8.00.01 when the octet boundaries are kept.

Why would an IP be in hex?

Packet captures, log files, firmware and low-level code often store addresses compactly in hexadecimal rather than dotted decimal.

What is the difference between packed and dotted hex?

Packed hex is a single eight-digit value for programs, while dotted hex keeps dots between octet pairs so humans can map them to the decimal octets.

Does it accept a 0x prefix?

Yes. The converter ignores a leading 0x and any separators, so you can paste hex in several common styles.

How many hex digits should the value have?

An IPv4 address needs exactly eight hex digits. The tool checks this and reports if the count is wrong.
