Generate IPv6 link-local addresses
Every IPv6-enabled interface automatically configures a link-local address in the fe80::/10 range, used for communication on the local network segment and for essential protocols like neighbour discovery. This generator builds that address from a MAC address using the modified EUI-64 method: it flips the universal or local bit in the first byte, inserts the value FFFE in the middle to extend forty-eight bits to sixty-four, and prepends the fe80 prefix.
The result is the link-local address a device would traditionally form for the given hardware, which is useful for predicting and verifying addresses.
Where link-local addresses are used
Link-local addresses never leave their network segment and are not routed, but they are fundamental to how IPv6 operates. Routers use them as next-hop addresses, and the neighbour discovery protocol that replaces ARP relies on them. Network engineers studying IPv6 or troubleshooting local connectivity frequently need to work out what link-local address an interface will have.
Modern operating systems may instead derive link-local addresses using randomised or stable privacy methods rather than EUI-64, but the EUI-64 derivation remains the textbook method and is still widely seen. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a link-local address?
It is an IPv6 address in the fe80::/10 range that every interface forms automatically for communication on its local link. It is never routed beyond that link.
How is it generated from a MAC?
The MAC is converted to a modified EUI-64 interface identifier by flipping a bit and inserting FFFE, then the fe80 prefix is prepended.
Why is the first byte of the MAC changed?
The modified EUI-64 process flips the universal or local bit, so the first byte of the interface identifier differs from the original MAC byte.
Do all devices use EUI-64 for link-local?
Many now use randomised or stable privacy addresses, but EUI-64 is the standard textbook method and still appears on many systems.
Can link-local addresses reach the internet?
No. They are confined to the local link and are used for local communication and protocols like neighbour discovery, not for internet traffic.
