Leverage cuts both ways, arithmetically

Borrowing to buy an asset multiplies both the return and the loss on your own capital. At two to one leverage a ten percent move in the asset is a twenty percent move in your equity. At five to one it is fifty percent. Nothing about this is controversial, and yet the second half of the sentence receives consistently less attention than the first, which is why margin calls arrive as a surprise to people who could have calculated the exact price in advance.

The maintenance requirement sets the trigger

A broker requires equity to stay above a percentage of the position value, commonly twenty five percent for equities in the United States under FINRA rules and often higher for volatile names or under a house requirement. When a falling price pushes equity below that line, the broker issues a call for more cash or sells the position. The trigger price is a simple function of the loan, the shares held and the maintenance percentage, and it can be computed the moment the trade is opened.

The call is larger than the shortfall

Meeting a margin call by depositing cash requires more than the amount by which equity fell short, because the deposit must restore the ratio rather than close a gap. Meeting it by selling requires liquidating a multiple of the shortfall, since selling reduces both the position and the equity. Knowing both numbers before the call arrives is the difference between a decision and a forced sale at the worst moment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between initial and maintenance margin?

Initial margin is what you must put up to open the position, commonly 50 percent for United States equities under Regulation T. Maintenance margin is the lower level equity must stay above afterward, commonly 25 percent under FINRA rules and often higher as a house requirement.

How is the margin call price calculated?

It is the loan amount divided by the number of shares times one minus the maintenance requirement. That is the price at which equity equals exactly the maintenance percentage of the position value.

How much cash does a margin call require?

Enough to restore equity to the maintenance level, which is the shortfall divided by the maintenance requirement rather than the shortfall itself. Meeting it by selling requires liquidating the shortfall divided by the maintenance requirement in value.

Can a broker liquidate without warning?

Yes. Margin agreements almost always permit immediate liquidation without notice, and in a fast market brokers exercise that right. The idea that you get time to respond is a courtesy rather than an entitlement.

Does this apply to futures and crypto?

The principle does, but the numbers do not. Futures use exchange set initial and maintenance margins per contract, and crypto venues often auto-liquidate at much tighter thresholds with a liquidation fee. Use the venue’s own figures rather than equity margin conventions.
