Estimate solar savings and payback
Solar panels cost money upfront and save on electricity bills over time, and whether they pay off depends on the numbers. This calculator estimates the electricity a system generates and the bill savings, with an optional payback estimate from the installation cost.
Why payback is the key figure
Solar is an investment: you pay for the system now and recover it through years of reduced bills. The payback period, how long until the savings equal the cost, is what tells you whether it makes financial sense, and it depends on your generation (driven by system size and sunlight), your electricity price, and the install cost. After payback, the electricity is effectively free for the panels’ remaining life, which is often decades, so a reasonable payback makes solar strongly worthwhile.
The investment case
This is an estimate for planning from the figures you enter, not financial advice, and real outcomes depend on rates and rules that change. Confirm anything important with the relevant institution or a qualified adviser. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so your financial figures are never uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much can solar save?
It depends on how much electricity the system generates, which offsets what you would otherwise buy at your electricity price. Larger systems and sunnier locations save more.
What is the payback period?
How long until the accumulated bill savings equal the installation cost. After that, the electricity is effectively free for the panels’ remaining life.
What makes solar worthwhile?
A reasonable payback period relative to the panels’ lifespan, which is often decades, so most of that life is free electricity after payback.
What affects generation?
System size, local sunlight and orientation. The calculator estimates generation and the resulting savings from your inputs.
Is this financial advice?
No. It is an estimate. Confirm generation and costs with an installer for your location.
