Calculate return on assets

Return on assets, or ROA, measures how efficiently a company uses its total assets to generate profit. It is calculated by dividing net income by total assets and expressing the result as a percentage. An ROA of eight percent means the company earns eight cents of profit for every dollar of assets it controls. Unlike return on equity, which looks only at shareholder capital, ROA considers all the resources a company uses, including those funded by debt, making it a broad measure of operational efficiency.

A higher ROA indicates the company is squeezing more profit from each dollar of assets.

Comparing efficiency

Return on assets is particularly useful for comparing companies within the same industry, since asset intensity varies enormously between sectors. A software company can achieve a high ROA with few physical assets, while a manufacturer or airline with large asset bases typically shows lower figures. Rising ROA over time signals improving efficiency, and a persistently low ROA may indicate underused or unproductive assets.

Because ROA includes debt-funded assets, it pairs well with return on equity: comparing the two reveals how much a company's returns are amplified by leverage. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ROA formula?

Return on assets equals net income divided by total assets, expressed as a percentage.

How is ROA different from ROE?

ROA measures return on all assets including those funded by debt, while ROE measures return only on shareholder equity.

What is a good ROA?

It depends heavily on the industry. Asset-light businesses show high ROA, while asset-heavy sectors like manufacturing run lower.

Why compare ROA within an industry?

Asset intensity varies so much between sectors that ROA is only meaningful when compared among similar businesses.

Should I use average total assets?

Analysts often average beginning and ending assets for a period. Using the period-end figure is a common simplification.
