Calculate contribution margin
The contribution margin is the amount left from each sale after covering the variable costs of producing that unit, money that contributes toward fixed costs and ultimately profit. It is calculated per unit as the selling price minus the variable cost, and as a ratio by dividing that margin by the selling price. A product selling for fifty with thirty of variable cost has a contribution margin of twenty per unit and a contribution margin ratio of forty percent. If you enter a quantity, the calculator also shows the total contribution across all units.
The ratio is particularly useful because it tells you what fraction of each sales dollar is available to cover fixed costs.
Using contribution margin
Contribution margin is central to pricing, product-mix and break-even decisions. Products with higher contribution margins contribute more to covering overheads, so businesses often prioritise them. The metric also underlies break-even analysis, since dividing fixed costs by the contribution margin gives the sales needed to break even.
Because it isolates variable costs, contribution margin shows the true incremental profitability of each sale, which is more useful for operating decisions than gross profit that may mix in fixed production costs. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is contribution margin?
It is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit, the amount each sale contributes toward fixed costs and profit.
What is the contribution margin ratio?
It is the contribution margin divided by the selling price, showing what fraction of each sales dollar is left after variable costs.
How does it relate to break-even?
Dividing total fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit gives the number of units you must sell to break even.
How is it different from gross profit?
Contribution margin subtracts only variable costs, while gross profit may also include fixed production costs, so the two can differ.
Why prioritise high-margin products?
Products with higher contribution margins cover fixed costs faster and add more to profit per sale, improving overall profitability.
