Calculate the next Bitcoin halving

Bitcoin block reward halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, in an event called the halving. This calculator determines where the current block height sits in the halving schedule, the current block reward, the next reward after the halving, and how many blocks remain until it occurs. It estimates the time remaining by assuming the target of one block every ten minutes. The reward started at 50 BTC and halves each era, so it is 50 divided by two to the power of the era number.

For example, after three halvings the reward is 6.25 BTC, and after four it becomes 3.125 BTC.

Why the halving matters

The halving is central to Bitcoin fixed-supply monetary policy, steadily reducing the rate at which new bitcoins are created until the supply caps at 21 million. Each halving cuts miner revenue from new coins in half, which affects mining economics, and historically halvings have drawn significant market attention. Knowing how far away the next one is helps miners and investors plan.

The time estimate is approximate because actual block times vary around the ten-minute target. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Bitcoin halving happen?

Every 210,000 blocks, which is approximately every four years given the ten-minute target block time.

How is the current reward calculated?

The reward is 50 BTC divided by two for each completed halving era, so it falls to 25, then 12.5, then 6.25, and so on.

How accurate is the time estimate?

It assumes a ten-minute block time. Actual times vary, so the real halving date can drift by days or weeks from the estimate.

Why does the halving matter?

It enforces the capped supply by cutting new issuance in half each era, affecting miner revenue and drawing market attention.
