The address of content is its hash

IPFS names files by what they contain, not where they live. A Content Identifier, or CID, is derived from the data itself, so the same content always produces the same CID and any change produces a different one. This tool generates a CID from text or a file, so you can see the identifier that IPFS would use for your content.

Why content-addressing changes how storage works

In the usual web, an address points to a location and the content there can change without the address changing. Content-addressing inverts this: the address is a fingerprint of the data, so it is impossible for a CID to point to anything other than the exact content it was made from. That is what makes IPFS content tamper-evident, and why the same file uploaded by two different people gets the same CID.

Generated locally from your data

The CID is computed from the content in your browser, so you can identify or verify data without uploading it anywhere. That is useful for checking that a file matches an expected CID, or for understanding what identifier your content will have before you publish it. The computation runs entirely on your machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CID?

A Content Identifier: an address for data on IPFS that is derived from the content itself, so identical content always yields the same CID and any change yields a different one.

Why does the same file always get the same CID?

Because the CID is computed from the file’s contents. Content-addressing means the identifier is a fingerprint of the data, not a chosen name or location.

How is this different from a normal URL?

A normal URL points to a location whose content can change. A CID points to specific content, so it cannot silently refer to something different later.

Is my file uploaded to generate the CID?

No. The CID is computed from the content in your browser, so you can identify or verify data without uploading it.

What can I use the CID for?

Verifying a file matches an expected identifier, or seeing what address your content will have on IPFS before publishing it.
