One value, three units that trip people up

Ethereum amounts appear in three units and getting them mixed up is expensive. Ether is the human-facing unit; Gwei is what gas prices are quoted in; Wei is the smallest indivisible unit that the blockchain actually works in. This converter moves a value between all three, so a gas price in Gwei and a balance in Ether and a raw amount in Wei all line up.

Why there is no rounding

One Ether is exactly a billion Gwei and 10^18 Wei, and those are exact integer relationships, not approximations. That matters because Wei is indivisible: there are no fractional Wei, and a calculation that rounds partway through can be off by amounts that add up. The converter keeps the full precision so the conversion is exact rather than a floating-point estimate.

For reading gas, balances and contract values

Anyone reading transaction details, estimating a fee, or working with contract call values needs to switch between these units constantly, because different parts of the ecosystem quote different ones. Having the exact conversion at hand prevents the factor-of-a-billion mistakes that unit confusion invites. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Wei, Gwei and Ether?

Ether is the main unit; Gwei is a billionth of an Ether, used to quote gas prices; Wei is the smallest unit, at 10^18 to one Ether, and is what the blockchain works in.

Why is Wei the base unit?

Because it is indivisible: the Ethereum protocol represents all amounts as whole numbers of Wei, so there are no fractional Wei and no rounding at the base level.

Is the conversion exact?

Yes. The relationships are exact integer powers of ten, and the converter keeps full precision rather than using floating-point approximations that could drift.

Why do gas prices use Gwei?

Because Gwei is a convenient size for gas: prices in Wei would be unwieldy long numbers, and in Ether they would be tiny fractions. Gwei sits at a readable scale.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
