Work out what a transaction will cost

An Ethereum transaction fee is not a fixed price; it is the gas the operation uses multiplied by the gas price you pay. This calculator takes a gas limit and a gas price and gives the total cost, so you can see what a transfer, a swap or a contract call will actually cost before you send it.

Gas used times gas price, and why both vary

The two inputs come from different places. The gas limit reflects how much computation the transaction does: a simple transfer uses little, a complex contract interaction uses far more. The gas price reflects how busy the network is, since you are bidding for space in a block. Multiplying them gives the fee, and understanding that a fee is high because of one, the other, or both tells you whether to wait for a quieter time or simplify the transaction.

An estimate to sanity-check a wallet

Before confirming, it helps to have an independent sense of what a fee should be, so a surprisingly high number in your wallet gets a second look rather than a blind confirmation. The calculator gives that independent estimate from the two numbers that determine it. The calculation runs in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is an Ethereum transaction fee calculated?

It is the gas used by the transaction multiplied by the gas price. The gas limit caps how much computation is paid for, and the gas price is what you pay per unit.

Why is my fee sometimes very high?

Either because the transaction does a lot of computation, raising the gas used, or because the network is busy and gas prices are high, or both. The calculator shows which factor is driving the cost.

What is a gas limit?

The maximum amount of gas you allow the transaction to consume. A simple transfer needs little; a complex contract call needs much more.

Should the fee match my wallet exactly?

It is an estimate from the inputs you provide. Use it to sanity-check a wallet’s figure so a surprising number gets a second look.
