Calculate a Bitcoin transaction fee
Bitcoin transaction fees are based on the transaction size in virtual bytes, not its monetary value, multiplied by the fee rate you choose in satoshis per virtual byte. This calculator computes the total fee in satoshis, bitcoin and dollars. A typical transaction of around 250 virtual bytes at a fee rate of 20 sats per virtual byte costs 5,000 sats. The fee rate you pay determines how quickly miners include your transaction.
Larger transactions, with more inputs and outputs, occupy more virtual bytes and therefore cost more at the same fee rate.
Fee rates and confirmation speed
When the Bitcoin network is busy, users compete for limited block space by bidding higher fee rates, so paying more sats per virtual byte gets faster confirmation. During quiet periods, low fee rates confirm fine. Choosing a fee rate is a trade-off between cost and speed, and wallets often suggest rates for different confirmation targets. Consolidating inputs when fees are low can reduce the size, and cost, of future transactions.
A virtual byte accounts for the discount given to witness data in SegWit transactions. All calculation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a Bitcoin fee calculated?
It is the transaction size in virtual bytes multiplied by the fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte, independent of the amount sent.
What is a virtual byte?
It is a unit of transaction size that accounts for the discount SegWit gives to witness data, used to measure fees fairly.
Why does transaction size vary?
More inputs and outputs make a transaction larger in virtual bytes, so complex transactions cost more at the same fee rate.
How do I get faster confirmation?
Pay a higher fee rate in sats per virtual byte. When the network is busy, higher-paying transactions are included by miners sooner.
