Generate secure API keys

API keys and tokens are random secrets used to authenticate requests to a service. This generator creates them with the structure you need: a custom prefix such as the common sk_live style, a chosen length, and a character set of letters and digits, hexadecimal, an extended set with URL-safe symbols, or Base58 that omits easily confused characters. It uses the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator where available, so the keys have strong, unpredictable randomness suitable for real use.

You can generate many keys at once, which is handy for seeding test accounts or provisioning several services.

Using and protecting keys

A prefix makes keys easier to recognise in logs and configuration and helps tools detect leaked secrets, which is why many providers use one. Longer keys are harder to guess; thirty-two characters or more from a large alphabet gives ample entropy for most purposes. Base58 keys avoid the characters zero, capital O, capital I and lowercase l, reducing transcription errors.

Treat generated keys as secrets: store them securely, never commit them to source control, and rotate them if exposed. The keys are created entirely in your browser and are never transmitted, so they remain private to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the generated keys cryptographically secure?

Where your browser provides a secure random generator, yes. The tool uses it for strong randomness, falling back to a standard generator only if it is unavailable.

Why add a prefix to a key?

A prefix makes keys recognisable in logs and config and helps automated scanners detect leaked secrets, which is why many services use one.

What length should an API key be?

Thirty-two characters or more from a large character set gives plenty of entropy to resist guessing. Longer keys are stronger.

What is the Base58 option for?

Base58 omits the easily confused characters zero, capital O, capital I and lowercase l, reducing errors when keys are read or typed by people.

Are the keys sent anywhere?

No. Keys are generated locally in your browser and never transmitted, so they stay private. Still, store and handle them as secrets.
