Escape text for regular expressions

Regular expressions treat many characters as special operators: dots, asterisks, question marks, brackets, parentheses, dollar signs and more all have meaning. When you want to match a piece of text literally, those characters must be escaped with a backslash so the regex engine treats them as ordinary characters. This tool escapes every regex metacharacter in your input, turning arbitrary text into a safe pattern fragment that matches exactly what you typed.

Optionally it wraps the escaped text as a complete pattern with delimiters and the global flag, ready to paste into code.

Why escaping matters

Building a regular expression from user input or a fixed string without escaping is a classic bug and a security risk. An unescaped dot matches any character, an unescaped parenthesis can break the pattern entirely, and malicious input can even cause catastrophic backtracking. Escaping ensures the text is matched literally and the pattern stays valid.

This is the same operation performed by escape functions in many languages, so the output is compatible with JavaScript, Python, PHP and others that share the common regex metacharacter set. All escaping happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which characters get escaped?

The regex metacharacters: dot, star, plus, question mark, caret, dollar, braces, parentheses, pipe, square brackets and backslash are all prefixed with a backslash.

Why do I need to escape text for regex?

So the text matches literally. Without escaping, characters like the dot or parentheses act as operators and change or break the match.

Is the output compatible with my language?

Yes. The escaped set matches the common metacharacters used by JavaScript, Python, PHP and similar engines, so the result works across them.

What does wrapping as a pattern do?

It surrounds the escaped text with slash delimiters and a global flag, producing a ready-to-use regular expression literal for JavaScript.

Does escaping prevent regex security issues?

Escaping untrusted text before inserting it into a pattern prevents injection and literal-match bugs, an important safeguard when building patterns dynamically.
