Convert JSON to a .env file
Configuration is often written as JSON during development but needs to be supplied as environment variables in a dotenv file for deployment. This converter transforms a JSON object into .env format, where each setting becomes a KEY=value line. Nested objects are flattened by joining the keys with a separator, so a host inside a database object becomes DATABASE_HOST. Values that contain spaces, quotes or comment characters are automatically wrapped in quotes so the .env file parses correctly.
You can uppercase all keys, the usual convention for environment variables, and choose the separator used to join nested keys.
From config to environment
Twelve-factor applications keep configuration in the environment, and dotenv files are the common way to supply those variables locally and in many deployment systems. Converting a structured JSON config into flat environment variables is a frequent task when moving a project between formats or onboarding a service that expects one or the other.
Nested structures lose their hierarchy in a flat environment, so the separator recreates it in the key names, a widely used convention. Arrays are serialised back to JSON so no information is lost. All conversion happens locally in your browser, keeping your configuration private.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are nested objects handled?
They are flattened by joining the parent and child keys with a separator, so a nested host key becomes something like DATABASE_HOST.
Should keys be uppercase?
Environment variables are conventionally uppercase, so the tool uppercases keys by default. You can turn this off if your setup uses lowercase keys.
What happens to values with spaces or quotes?
They are wrapped in double quotes and any inner quotes are escaped, so the resulting .env lines parse correctly in standard dotenv loaders.
How are arrays converted?
Arrays are serialised back to their JSON representation as the value, preserving the data since .env has no native list type.
Can I change the nesting separator?
Yes. The default is an underscore, but you can set any short separator used to join nested keys into the final variable names.
