Hash and verify passwords with Argon2
Argon2 is a modern, award-winning password-hashing algorithm designed to resist the hardware attackers use to crack passwords. This tool generates and verifies Argon2 hashes, so you can produce properly hashed passwords or check one against a hash.
Why Argon2 is the modern choice
Passwords must never be stored in plain text; they are stored as hashes, and the hashing must be deliberately slow and memory-hard to resist attackers who try billions of guesses on specialised hardware. Older hashes like plain SHA are far too fast for this, making them easy to crack in bulk. Argon2 is memory-hard, meaning it needs substantial memory per guess, which cripples the parallel hardware attackers rely on, and it won the Password Hashing Competition for exactly this reason. Using it, with sensible parameters, is current best practice for storing passwords.
Best-practice hashing
The tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded, which is exactly what you want when the input is your own security-sensitive data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why not store passwords in plain text or a fast hash?
Because plain text is exposed in any breach, and fast hashes like SHA let attackers try billions of guesses on specialised hardware. Password hashing must be deliberately slow.
What makes Argon2 strong?
It is memory-hard, needing substantial memory per guess, which cripples the parallel hardware attackers use. It won the Password Hashing Competition for this.
What does verifying a hash do?
It checks whether a password matches a stored Argon2 hash, which is how a login confirms a password without ever storing it in readable form.
Does Argon2 use a salt?
Yes. A unique salt per password ensures identical passwords produce different hashes, defeating precomputed-table attacks. It is part of the hash.
Is my password uploaded?
No. The hashing runs entirely in your browser.
