View a hex dump of text
A hex dump shows the raw bytes of data in hexadecimal alongside a readable ASCII representation, the classic output of command-line tools like hexdump and xxd. This viewer turns text into such a dump: each line shows a byte offset, sixteen bytes in hexadecimal split into two groups of eight, and an ASCII column where printable characters are shown and others appear as dots. The text is first encoded as UTF-8, so multi-byte characters are shown as their actual bytes.
This layout makes it easy to inspect exactly what bytes a piece of text contains, including hidden or non-printable characters.
Why inspect bytes
Looking at the byte-level representation of text is invaluable for debugging encoding problems, spotting invisible characters like zero-width spaces or unexpected line endings, and understanding how characters map to bytes in UTF-8. The ASCII column lets you read the printable content while the hex reveals everything, including control characters that would otherwise be invisible.
Seeing the offsets also helps you locate a specific byte within a larger piece of data. Everything is computed in your browser, so the text you inspect stays private. All processing happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hex dump?
It is a view of data showing each byte in hexadecimal alongside an ASCII column, the classic format produced by tools like hexdump and xxd.
Why are some characters shown as dots?
Non-printable bytes, such as control characters, have no readable form, so the ASCII column shows a dot in their place while the hex shows the real value.
How is the text encoded?
As UTF-8, so characters beyond ASCII appear as their actual multi-byte sequences, which is useful for debugging encoding issues.
What is the offset column for?
It shows the position of the first byte on each line in hexadecimal, helping you locate a specific byte within the data.
