Find the location behind an IP

An IP address maps to a rough geographic location, and looking it up is useful for context. This tool finds the geographical location associated with an IP address, along with the network it belongs to, so you can place an address that appears in a log or a message.

Why the location is approximate

IP geolocation works from databases that map address ranges to the locations where their networks are registered or operated, not from any signal from the device. So it places an address by its network, which usually gives the right country and region but often the wrong specific city, and a VPN or mobile network can move it entirely. Understanding this is what lets you use the result sensibly: it is good for rough context, spotting a login from an unexpected country, not for pinpointing anyone.

Context for an address

The tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is uploaded, which is exactly what you want when the input is your own security-sensitive data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Roughly accurate for country and region, often wrong for the specific city, because it maps the network’s registered location, not the device’s actual position.

Why is it not precise?

Because it comes from databases mapping address ranges to network locations, not from any GPS or device signal. A VPN or mobile network can shift it entirely.

What is it good for?

Rough context, such as noticing a login from an unexpected country or placing an address in a log, rather than pinpointing a person.

Can a VPN change the result?

Yes. A VPN routes traffic through its own servers, so the geolocation reflects the VPN’s location, not the user’s real one.

Is my input uploaded?

The lookup places the address you provide; it is intended for context, not precise tracking.
