Generate pronounceable passwords

Pronounceable passwords alternate consonants and vowels to form syllables that are random but can actually be said aloud, making them easier to remember and type than a jumble of unrelated characters. This generator builds them to a length you choose, optionally capitalising the first letter and appending a couple of digits. The result looks like a made-up word, such as a nonsense name, rather than a string of symbols, yet it is generated from genuine randomness.

Because each character is chosen at random from the appropriate consonant or vowel set, the passwords are unpredictable despite being readable.

Readable yet random

Completely random passwords are strong but awkward to type and dictate, especially over the phone or onto a device without a full keyboard. Pronounceable passwords strike a balance: they keep much of the randomness while being easy to communicate and recall. They suit situations where a password must be entered manually or shared verbally, such as temporary access codes.

For maximum strength, choose a longer length, since every extra character multiplies the possible combinations. Adding digits further increases the space. All generation happens locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a password pronounceable?

Alternating consonants and vowels form syllables that can be said aloud, so the password reads like a made-up word rather than random symbols.

Are pronounceable passwords secure?

They are reasonably strong when long enough, since the characters are randomly chosen, though a fully random password of the same length has slightly more entropy.

When are they useful?

When a password must be typed manually, dictated over the phone, or remembered, since they are far easier to handle than random strings.

How do I make them stronger?

Increase the length and add digits. Every extra character greatly increases the number of possible passwords an attacker must try.
