Squaring and cubing the units too

The most common mistake is converting a length and forgetting that area scales with the square and volume with the cube. One metre is 100 centimetres, but one square metre is 10,000 square centimetres and one cubic metre is 1,000,000 cubic centimetres. Someone converting a room area from metres to centimetres by multiplying by 100 lands a hundredfold out, and the answer looks plausible enough to act on.

Radius and diameter

Circle and sphere formulas take the radius, and measurements are usually taken as diameter, because that is what a tape measure across a pipe or tank gives you. Feeding a diameter into a formula expecting radius overstates a circle's area by a factor of four and a sphere's volume by eight. Halve first, deliberately.

Capacity and volume are the same thing in different clothes

One litre is exactly 1,000 cubic centimetres, and one cubic metre is 1,000 litres. Tanks and containers are usually specified in litres or gallons while dimensions are in metres, so any real calculation crosses between them. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an Imperial gallon 4.546, which is a 20 percent difference that has ruined more than one fuel calculation.

Irregular shapes decompose

Real rooms and plots are rarely rectangles. The reliable approach is to split the shape into rectangles and triangles, calculate each, and sum them, rather than trying to average dimensions. Averaging length and width across an irregular shape gives an answer that can be substantially wrong in either direction.

Round at the end, and add waste

Rounding at each intermediate step compounds. Carry full precision and round once. Then, for anything you are buying, add a waste allowance: flooring and tiling conventionally add 10 percent, more for diagonal layouts or patterned material that needs alignment. Ordering the exact calculated area guarantees a second trip.
