Calculate density, mass or volume
Density measures how much mass is packed into a given volume, calculated as mass divided by volume. This calculator works out density from mass and volume, and because the three quantities are linked by one relationship, it can also solve for mass as density times volume, or for volume as mass divided by density. Enter the two values you know and choose which quantity to find.
Results are given in grams per cubic centimetre, the common unit for solids and liquids, along with kilograms per cubic metre so the figure fits scientific and engineering contexts.
Why density matters
Density explains whether an object floats or sinks, helps identify materials, and is essential in chemistry, physics, engineering and manufacturing. Water has a density of about one gram per cubic centimetre, so materials denser than that sink in water while lighter ones float. Comparing a measured density against known values is a quick way to identify a substance or check its purity.
The default units are grams and cubic centimetres, which give density directly in grams per cubic centimetre. Convert your measurements to these units, or interpret the result consistently with whatever units you use. All calculation runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the density formula?
Density equals mass divided by volume. Rearranged, mass equals density times volume, and volume equals mass divided by density.
What units does the calculator use?
It uses grams for mass and cubic centimetres for volume, giving density in grams per cubic centimetre, and also shows kilograms per cubic metre.
Why does a material float or sink?
An object floats in a fluid when its density is lower than the fluid\'s. Since water is about one gram per cubic centimetre, less dense materials float on it.
Can I solve for mass or volume?
Yes. Choose what to solve for, enter the other two quantities, and the tool rearranges the formula to find the missing value.
How do I identify a material by density?
Measure its mass and volume, calculate the density, then compare it with published densities of candidate materials to find a match.
