Matrix operations without the arithmetic slog
Matrix arithmetic is mechanical but error-prone: one misplaced element in a multiplication and the whole answer is wrong. This calculator performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, the determinant and the transpose on matrices you enter, so you get correct results without grinding through the element-by-element bookkeeping.
The rules that make or break each operation
Each operation has a rule that must hold. Addition needs both matrices the same size. Multiplication needs the first matrix’s columns to match the second’s rows, and the result’s shape follows from that; it is also not commutative, so order matters. The determinant only exists for a square matrix. Knowing these constraints is half of matrix work, and the calculator applies them so an invalid operation is caught rather than silently producing nonsense.
For study, graphics and data
Matrices are the language of linear algebra, and they run computer graphics transforms, physics simulations and much of data science. Whether you are checking homework or verifying a transform, having the operations computed correctly lets you focus on what the matrices mean rather than the arithmetic. The computation runs in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I not multiply any two matrices?
Because multiplication requires the first matrix’s number of columns to equal the second’s number of rows. When they do not match, the product is undefined.
Does the order of multiplication matter?
Yes. Matrix multiplication is not commutative, so A times B generally differs from B times A. The calculator respects the order you enter.
Which matrices have a determinant?
Only square matrices, those with equal rows and columns. The determinant is undefined for non-square matrices.
What is the transpose?
The matrix flipped over its diagonal, turning rows into columns. It is defined for any matrix regardless of shape.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The computation runs entirely in your browser.
