Calculate average speed
Average speed is the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken. This calculator works out the average speed from a distance and a time, converting whatever units you choose into a consistent result. Enter the distance in kilometres, miles or metres and the time in hours, minutes or seconds, and it reports the speed in kilometres per hour, miles per hour and metres per second so the figure is useful in any context.
Average speed differs from instantaneous speed: it smooths out the whole journey, including stops and changes of pace, into a single representative figure.
Everyday speed calculations
Drivers estimate journey times, runners and cyclists track their pace, and teachers set speed-distance-time problems that this relationship solves. Because speed, distance and time are linked by one formula, knowing any two lets you find the third, which is handy for planning trips and checking performance.
The conversions use exact factors, with one mile equal to 1.609344 kilometres, so results are accurate across units. For pace in minutes per kilometre or mile, a dedicated running pace calculator may suit better. All calculation runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average speed formula?
Average speed equals total distance divided by total time. Keeping the units consistent, or letting the tool convert them, gives a reliable figure.
How is average speed different from instantaneous speed?
Average speed covers a whole journey, including pauses and pace changes, while instantaneous speed is the speed at one particular moment.
Can I mix units like miles and minutes?
Yes. Choose any distance and time units you like, and the calculator converts them internally before reporting the speed in several units.
How do I convert the result to metres per second?
The tool already shows metres per second alongside kilometres and miles per hour, so no manual conversion is needed.
Why must time be greater than zero?
Speed divides distance by time, so a time of zero would require dividing by zero, which is undefined.
