Calculate the cube root

The cube root of a number is the value that, when multiplied by itself three times, gives that number. The cube root of sixty-four is four because four cubed is sixty-four. Unlike the square root, the cube root is defined for negative numbers as well, since a negative times a negative times a negative is negative, so the cube root of minus twenty-seven is minus three. This calculator finds the cube root of any real number and tells you whether it is a perfect cube.

A verification line cubes the result so you can confirm it reproduces your original number, within normal floating-point precision.

Cube roots in practice

Cube roots arise whenever you reverse a cubing operation. In geometry they give the side length of a cube from its volume. In science they appear in scaling laws that relate volume to length, and in finance they help find an average growth rate over three periods. Students meet cube roots alongside square roots when learning about powers and radicals.

Because the browser computes the cube root with a dedicated function, negative inputs are handled correctly and return real negative roots rather than errors. For roots of other degrees, a general nth-root calculator extends the same idea. All calculation runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cube root?

It is the number that, cubed, equals your input. For example the cube root of 125 is 5 because 5 times 5 times 5 is 125.

Can a negative number have a cube root?

Yes. Unlike square roots, every real number has a real cube root, and the cube root of a negative number is negative.

What is a perfect cube?

A perfect cube is a number whose cube root is a whole number, such as 8, 27 or 64. The tool tells you when your number is one.

Why does the verification differ slightly?

Cube roots are stored as floating-point approximations, so cubing the result may differ from the original in the last few digits.

How do I find other roots?

Use an nth-root calculator and set the degree. The cube root is simply the nth root with a degree of three.
