Calculate percent change between two values

Percent change measures how much a value has grown or shrunk relative to its starting point, expressed as a percentage. It is the difference between the new value and the original value, divided by the absolute original value, multiplied by one hundred. A positive result is a percentage increase and a negative result is a percentage decrease. This calculator reports the percent change, the direction, the raw difference and the multiplier that turns the old value into the new one.

The multiplier is useful when you want to apply the same change elsewhere: a thirty percent increase corresponds to a multiplier of one point three.

Where percent change is used

Percent change is one of the most common calculations in business and everyday life. It describes price rises and discounts, revenue growth, population change, exam-score improvement and swings in investments. Because it is relative to the starting value, it lets you compare changes between quantities of very different sizes on a fair footing.

Take care with the base: a value that falls by fifty percent and then rises by fifty percent does not return to where it started, because each percentage is taken from a different base. The original value cannot be zero, as that would make the change undefined. All calculation runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the percent change formula?

Percent change equals the new value minus the original value, divided by the absolute original value, multiplied by one hundred.

What is the difference between percent change and percent difference?

Percent change has a clear before and after, measured against the original. Percent difference compares two values with no direction, using their average as the base.

Why can the original value not be zero?

The formula divides by the original value, so if it is zero the percent change is undefined no matter what the new value is.

What does the multiplier tell me?

The multiplier is the factor that converts the original into the new value. A twenty-five percent increase gives a multiplier of 1.25.

Do successive percent changes add up?

No. Because each change applies to a new base, a rise then a fall of the same percentage does not cancel out. Combine them by multiplying the factors.
