Turn a distance and time into pace
Runners think in pace, minutes per kilometre or per mile, but races are timed and planned in total time over a distance. This calculator converts between them: enter a distance and time to get your pace per km and per mile plus your speed, and use it to plan the splits a target finish time requires.
Why pace is the useful number
Total time tells you the outcome; pace tells you how to run. Knowing you need to average, say, five minutes per kilometre lets you check your effort at any point in a race and adjust, which a finish-time goal alone does not. Splits break a race into checkpoints, so you can see whether you are on target at each stage rather than discovering at the finish that you started too fast, which is the classic mistake.
For training and race planning
Whether you are pacing intervals in training or planning to hit a personal best, converting cleanly between pace, speed and time is the everyday arithmetic of running. The calculation runs in your browser, so your training figures are not uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (minutes per km or mile); speed is distance per time (km/h or mph). They describe the same running but from opposite directions.
Why is pace more useful than finish time for planning?
Because pace tells you how to run at any moment, letting you check and adjust your effort, whereas a finish-time goal only tells you the outcome you want.
What are splits?
The times at checkpoints through a race. Planning splits lets you confirm you are on target at each stage rather than finding out at the finish that you paced it wrong.
Does it do both km and miles?
Yes. It gives pace per kilometre and per mile, so you can work in whichever unit your race and training use.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
