Reduce fractions to lowest terms

A fraction is in its lowest terms, or simplest form, when the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than one. The Fraction Simplifier reduces any fraction by dividing both the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor, the largest whole number that divides them both. For example, eighteen twenty-fourths has a greatest common divisor of six, so it simplifies to three quarters.

The tool shows the greatest common divisor it used, the simplified fraction, the equivalent mixed number when the fraction is greater than one, and the decimal value, giving you a complete picture in one step.

Why simplify fractions

Simplified fractions are easier to read, compare and use in further calculation, which is why schoolwork almost always asks for answers in lowest terms. Simplifying also reveals when two fractions are equal, since equivalent fractions share the same simplest form.

Negative fractions are handled by moving the sign to the front, and a denominator of one is reported as a whole number. The numerator and denominator are rounded to whole numbers, as fractions are defined with integer parts. All calculation runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does simplifying a fraction mean?

It means dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor so they share no common factor other than one.

How is the greatest common divisor found?

The tool uses the Euclidean algorithm, repeatedly replacing the larger number with the remainder of dividing the two, until the remainder is zero.

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number writes an improper fraction, one greater than one, as a whole number plus a proper fraction, such as seven quarters becoming one and three quarters.

How are negative fractions handled?

The overall sign is placed in front of the simplified fraction, so a negative numerator or denominator gives a negative result in lowest terms.

Can I enter decimals?

Fractions are defined with whole-number parts, so the numerator and denominator are rounded to integers before simplifying.
