Estimate the energy an activity costs

Different activities burn energy at different rates, and this calculator estimates the calories burned for running, walking, cycling, swimming and many others using MET values, the standard measure of an activity’s intensity, scaled by your weight and the time spent.

What a MET actually is

A MET, or metabolic equivalent, expresses how intense an activity is relative to sitting still: an activity of 4 METs burns four times the energy of resting. Multiplying the MET value by your body weight and the duration gives an energy estimate, which is why a heavier person burns more doing the same activity, and why intensity and time both matter. Published MET tables make this consistent across activities.

A comparative estimate, framed honestly

These are estimates from a standard formula for general information, not medical advice. Individual health depends on far more than any single number, so treat the result as a rough guide and consult a professional for anything that matters. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so your figures are not uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a MET?

A metabolic equivalent: a measure of an activity’s intensity relative to resting. An activity of 4 METs burns roughly four times the energy of sitting still.

Why does my weight affect the result?

Because moving a heavier body costs more energy, so the same activity for the same time burns more calories for a heavier person. The MET value is scaled by weight.

How accurate are the estimates?

They are reasonable comparative estimates from published MET values, but individual metabolism, efficiency and effort vary, so treat them as approximate.

Which activities are covered?

Running, walking, cycling, swimming and many others, each with its own MET intensity value.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a general estimate. Consult a professional for anything health-related.
