Three coordinate-geometry answers at once

Given two points, the questions that follow are usually the same three: where is the point halfway between them, how far apart are they, and what is the slope of the line joining them. This calculator finds the midpoint, distance and slope together, so one set of coordinates answers all three.

The formulas, and why they connect

The midpoint averages the x-coordinates and the y-coordinates separately. The distance comes from the Pythagorean theorem applied to the horizontal and vertical gaps. The slope is the vertical change divided by the horizontal change. They are related because all three are built from the same two differences between the points, which is why it makes sense to compute them together rather than one tool at a time.

For geometry, and the vertical-line edge case

These are the workhorses of coordinate geometry, needed constantly in study and in any work involving points on a plane. One case worth knowing: when the two points share an x-coordinate, the line is vertical and the slope is undefined, not zero, because the horizontal change is nought and you cannot divide by it. The calculator handles that correctly. It runs in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the midpoint found?

By averaging the two x-coordinates and, separately, the two y-coordinates, giving the point exactly halfway between them.

How is the distance calculated?

With the Pythagorean theorem: the distance is the square root of the squared horizontal gap plus the squared vertical gap.

What happens to slope on a vertical line?

It is undefined, not zero, because the horizontal change is zero and you cannot divide by it. The calculator reports this correctly.

Why compute all three together?

Because midpoint, distance and slope are all built from the same two differences between the points, so one set of coordinates answers all three.

Is my input uploaded?
