Every photo carries more than the picture

A photo file records far more than the image: the camera or phone that took it, the exposure settings, the date and time, and often the exact GPS coordinates. This viewer extracts that EXIF metadata from an image so you can see what a photo is quietly carrying, which is both interesting and, in the case of location, a genuine privacy matter.

The location data is the part that matters most

Camera settings are curiosity; embedded GPS coordinates are a privacy risk. A photo taken at home and posted online can reveal exactly where home is, because the coordinates travel inside the file. Seeing the EXIF is the first step to understanding what you would be sharing, and to deciding whether to strip it before posting. Many platforms remove it on upload, but not all, and not always.

Read locally, because the photo is yours

The whole point of inspecting a photo’s metadata is defeated if you have to upload the photo to do it. This viewer reads the EXIF in your browser, so a private image never leaves your machine while you check what it contains. Use it to audit your own photos before sharing, or to understand what an image reveals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EXIF data?

Metadata stored inside a photo by the camera or phone, including the device, exposure settings, timestamp and often GPS coordinates of where it was taken.

Why is the GPS data a privacy concern?

Because a photo taken at home and shared online can reveal your exact location through its embedded coordinates. Seeing the EXIF lets you decide whether to remove it first.

Do social platforms remove EXIF?

Many strip it on upload, but not all do and not always, so it is worth checking rather than assuming your location is not being shared.

Is my photo uploaded to read its EXIF?

No. The metadata is read in your browser, so a private image never leaves your machine.

What settings does EXIF record?

Commonly the camera or phone model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, timestamp and, when location was enabled, GPS coordinates.
