One icon is never enough

A site needs a favicon for browser tabs, larger versions for bookmarks and high density displays, an Apple touch icon for iOS home screens, several Android sizes for the web manifest, and a Windows tile. Each has a different expected size and some have platform-specific requirements about padding and shape. Producing them by hand from a source file is tedious and easy to get partly wrong, which is why so many sites have a working favicon and a broken home screen icon.

Platforms crop differently

iOS applies rounded corners and, on some versions, a slight zoom. Android may apply a circular, squircle or rounded square mask depending on the launcher. A design that fills the frame edge to edge loses its extremities to whichever mask is applied. The convention is to keep meaningful content inside a safe zone of roughly 80 percent of the frame, which is what the padding control here reserves.

SVG is now the best favicon

A single SVG favicon scales to any size, is usually smaller than one PNG, and can change with the colour scheme using a media query inside the file. Browsers that do not support it fall back to the ICO, so declaring both covers everything. The raster set is still needed for home screen icons, which have to be bitmaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which icon sizes do I actually need?

A 32 pixel favicon, an SVG favicon, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for the web manifest covers almost everything. The longer lists circulating include sizes for platforms that no longer exist.

Why does my icon look cropped on a phone?

Because iOS and Android apply their own masks: rounded corners, circles or squircles depending on the launcher. Content near the edge is cut, which is why meaningful detail should stay inside about 80 percent of the frame.

Should I use an SVG favicon?

Yes, alongside an ICO. An SVG scales to any size, is usually smaller than a single PNG, and can respond to the colour scheme with a media query inside the file. The ICO covers browsers that do not support it.

What is a maskable icon?

An Android manifest icon declaring that it has enough padding for any mask the launcher applies. Without the maskable purpose, Android adds its own white background and shrinks the icon, which usually looks worse.

Does the favicon have to be at the site root?

Not if you declare it with a link tag, which is the normal approach. Browsers still request /favicon.ico as a fallback, so having one there avoids a pointless 404 in the logs.
