PNG to WebP Converter

Two modes, and picking correctly matters

Lossless WebP preserves every pixel and is typically around 26 percent smaller than the equivalent PNG. Lossy WebP discards information and can be dramatically smaller, often by 70 percent or more. For screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text, use lossless: lossy compression produces visible fringing around hard edges, which is exactly what those images are made of. For photographs saved as PNG, lossy is the right answer and the saving is enormous.

PNG photographs are the big win

A photograph stored as PNG is usually several times larger than it needs to be, because PNG's lossless compression is designed for flat colour and sharp edges, not continuous tone. Converting one to lossy WebP at quality 80 frequently cuts 80 to 90 percent of the file with no visible difference. If your site is heavy, this single conversion is often the largest available win.

Transparency carries over

WebP supports an alpha channel in both lossy and lossless modes, which PNG's main competitor JPEG never could. That combination, transparency plus efficient photographic compression, is the reason the format exists.

Compatibility is settled

Every current browser supports WebP, Safari included since version 14. The remaining refusals are older desktop software and some email clients, not browsers. For images served on a website there is no practical compatibility argument left.

Keep the PNG

If the PNG is a working master you will edit again, keep it. Converting to lossy WebP and later editing that file compounds loss across generations. Treat WebP as an export format and the PNG as the source.
