Calculate megapixels
A megapixel is one million pixels, and the megapixel count of an image is simply its width multiplied by its height, divided by a million. This calculator computes the megapixels from the pixel dimensions, along with the exact total pixel count and the aspect ratio. A four-thousand by three-thousand image contains twelve million pixels, or twelve megapixels, with a four-by-three aspect ratio.
Megapixels describe how much detail an image holds and are the headline figure quoted for camera sensors.
Understanding image resolution
More megapixels mean more detail and the ability to print larger or crop more aggressively, but they also mean larger files. The megapixel figure alone does not capture image quality, which also depends on the sensor, lens and processing, but it is a useful measure of raw resolution. Knowing the pixel count helps when judging whether an image is large enough for a particular print size or display.
The aspect ratio shown reveals the shape of the image, such as the common four-by-three or sixteen-by-nine. All calculation happens locally in your browser.
Notes
This Megapixel Calculator tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is uploaded or stored on a server. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a megapixel?
One million pixels. An image megapixel count is its width times its height in pixels, divided by one million.
How do I calculate megapixels?
Multiply the width by the height to get the total pixels, then divide by a million. The tool does this and shows the result.
Do more megapixels mean better quality?
They mean more detail and larger prints, but quality also depends on the sensor, lens and processing, so megapixels alone are not the whole story.
What does the aspect ratio tell me?
It describes the shape of the image, such as four-by-three or sixteen-by-nine, derived by simplifying the width and height.
