Turn a picture into characters

ASCII art represents an image using text characters, mapping light and dark areas to characters of different visual density. This tool converts any image or photo into ASCII text art right in your browser, with an adjustable width so you control the detail and size of the result.

How brightness becomes characters

The trick is that some characters look darker than others: a solid block covers more of its cell than a full stop. The converter samples the image and picks a character for each region based on how bright it is, so dark areas get dense characters and light areas get sparse ones. Widening the output samples more finely, capturing more detail at the cost of a larger block of text.

Text you can paste anywhere

The result is plain text, which means it pastes into a comment, a message, a code file or a terminal, anywhere a picture cannot go. That is the appeal: an image reduced to characters travels through text-only channels. The conversion runs in your browser, so your image is not uploaded to become art.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an image become text?

Each region of the image is replaced by a character whose visual density matches the brightness there, so dark areas get dense characters and light areas get sparse ones.

What does the width setting do?

It controls how finely the image is sampled: a wider output captures more detail but produces a larger block of text.

Where can I use ASCII art?

Anywhere plain text goes: comments, messages, code files and terminals, which is the appeal, since a picture cannot go there but text can.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the image stays on your machine.

Does it work on any image?

Yes. Photos and graphics both convert; high-contrast images with clear light and dark areas produce the most recognisable results.
