A vector has no pixels until you choose some

An SVG describes shapes, not a grid of colours, so asking how many pixels it is only has an answer once you pick an output size. That is why exporting at four times the nominal size costs nothing in quality: the shapes are redrawn at the new size rather than enlarged, and edges stay exactly as crisp as they were. Resizing an existing PNG upward cannot do this, because the information was thrown away when it was first rasterised. This converter shows the intrinsic size it derived, where that number came from, and what the output will be before you commit to it.

Where the intrinsic size comes from matters

An SVG may carry width and height attributes, a viewBox, both, or neither, and they do not always agree. Width in percent means nothing outside a containing element, so the viewBox has to supply the aspect ratio instead. When the viewBox ratio conflicts with the width and height, the browser letterboxes rather than stretches, which produces blank margins that look like a conversion fault but are the specified behaviour. This tool reports which source it used so a surprising output size is explainable rather than mysterious.

Three things break SVG rasterisation quietly

Scripts never run during conversion, so anything drawn by script is absent. External images and fonts either fail to load or taint the canvas so the PNG cannot be read back at all. And a webfont that has not finished loading is silently substituted, so text shifts. Each of these is detected in the markup and reported before you export, rather than leaving you to compare two images and wonder what changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size should I export at?

Match the largest size the image will be displayed at, then double it for high-density screens. Because the source is vector, exporting larger costs quality nothing; it only costs file size.

Why does my SVG say it has no usable size?

It has no viewBox and its width and height are in percentages or absent. A percentage has no meaning outside a containing element, so there is no pixel size to derive. Adding a viewBox fixes it.

Why is there blank space around my image?

The viewBox aspect ratio does not match the width and height attributes. The browser applies preserveAspectRatio, which letterboxes the drawing inside the box instead of stretching it. That is correct SVG behaviour rather than a conversion fault.

Why did the download fail with a security error?

The SVG drew an image or font from another origin, which taints the canvas and makes the pixels unreadable. Inline those resources as data URIs and the export works.

Why does my text look wrong in the PNG?

Rasterisation uses whatever fonts the browser has at that instant, so a webfont that has not loaded is substituted silently. Converting text to paths before exporting is the reliable fix.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The SVG is turned into a blob, drawn onto a canvas and read back as a PNG entirely inside your browser. Nothing leaves the page.
