Image Watermark Tool

An image watermark tool overlays text on a photo, your name, a copyright line or a draft marker, with control over colour, opacity, size and which corner it sits in. It works on a canvas in your browser, so the image is never uploaded, and you download the watermarked copy directly.

How it works

Drop or select an image and it loads onto a canvas at full resolution. Type your watermark text and adjust colour, opacity and font size; a nine-point position control places it in any corner, edge or the centre. The preview updates live, and the download button saves the composited image. Because everything happens on the canvas locally, the original file never leaves your device, which matters for photos you have not published yet.

Choosing opacity and placement

A watermark has to survive being cropped out without ruining the image. Full opacity in one corner is easy to crop away; low opacity across the centre is harder to remove but obscures the picture. A common compromise is a semi-transparent mark (around 40 to 60 percent) placed where cropping it would also cut important content. For proof or draft images, a bolder diagonal mark across the middle is appropriate because removability, not aesthetics, is the goal.

What a watermark does and does not do

A visible watermark deters casual copying and identifies the source, but it is not copy protection: it can be cropped, cloned out or covered, and tools exist that remove them. It also does not embed ownership in the file's metadata. For provenance you can prove, keep the unwatermarked original and consider metadata or C2PA content credentials; the watermark is a visible deterrent, not a legal lock.

Formats and quality

It handles the common web image formats and exports a raster copy. Watermarking re-encodes the image, so save at high quality if you will publish it, and keep your untouched original for archiving and for any future edit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image loads onto a canvas in your browser and the watermark is composited locally. The file never leaves your device, so you can watermark unpublished or private photos safely.

Can the watermark be removed?

A visible watermark can be cropped, cloned out or covered, and removal tools exist. It deters casual copying and marks the source but is not copy protection. Keep the unwatermarked original for your records.

Where should I place the watermark?

Somewhere that cropping it would also remove important content, at moderate opacity. A corner mark is easy to crop away; a centred, semi-transparent mark is harder to remove but obscures more of the image. Balance the two for your use.

Does it add ownership to the file's metadata?

No. It only adds a visible overlay. For provenance you can verify, keep the original and consider metadata fields or C2PA content credentials, which record authorship in the file itself.

What image formats work?

The common web formats (JPEG, PNG, WebP). The result is exported as a raster image. Since watermarking re-encodes the file, save at high quality for publishing and archive your original separately.
