A kaleidoscope is one wedge repeated

The instrument uses two mirrors at an angle, and the number of reflections depends on that angle: mirrors at 60 degrees produce six-fold symmetry, at 45 degrees eight-fold. Reproducing it digitally means taking one wedge of the source and drawing it repeatedly around a centre, alternating mirrored and unmirrored copies. The alternation is what makes adjacent segments meet cleanly instead of showing a seam at every boundary.

Mirroring is how a tile becomes seamless

A tile made by simply repeating a rectangle shows a hard seam wherever the edges do not match. Mirroring the tile horizontally and vertically guarantees every edge meets its own reflection, so the seams disappear. The cost is a visible axis of symmetry through the pattern, which reads as deliberate in a decorative context and as an artefact in a photographic one.

Where the centre sits changes everything

The wedge is taken from a specific part of the image, and moving that point changes the result completely: a wedge from a busy area produces a dense pattern, one from a flat area produces a plain one with a decorated rim. This is the control that matters most, and it is the reason two people using the same source image get entirely different patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many segments should I use?

Six and eight are the classical choices, matching mirrors at 60 and 45 degrees. Higher counts make each wedge narrower, so less of the source shows and the result becomes more abstract.

Why does the pattern have visible lines through it?

Because mirror symmetry creates axes where a shape meets its own reflection. That reads as deliberate in a decorative pattern and as an artefact on a photograph, and it is inherent to the technique rather than a fault.

How do I make a tile that repeats seamlessly?

Mirror the tile horizontally and vertically, so every edge meets its own reflection and the seams disappear. The cost is a visible axis of symmetry, which is the trade this technique always makes.

Which part of the image is used?

A wedge taken from around the centre point you choose. Moving it changes the result completely, which is why it is the control that matters most and why the same source gives entirely different patterns.

What makes a good source image?

Something with strong colour and clear shapes rather than fine detail, since each wedge is small and detail is lost. Flowers, textures and abstract images work well; photographs of faces rarely do.
