Pasting a spreadsheet into a README

Markdown tables are the standard way to put tabular data into a README, a pull request description, a wiki page or a documentation site. They are also tedious to write by hand: every row needs pipes in the right places, the header separator has to have the same number of columns, and any pipe character inside a cell has to be escaped or the row silently breaks into the wrong number of columns.

What actually breaks a Markdown table

Three things. A literal pipe inside a cell, which must be written as an escaped backslash pipe. A newline inside a cell, which Markdown tables cannot represent at all and which has to become a break tag or be flattened. And a mismatch between the number of header cells and the number of separator dashes, which causes most renderers to give up and print the raw text. All three come from pasting real data rather than typing a table by hand.

Alignment and readability

The separator row controls alignment: a colon on the left aligns left, on the right aligns right, and on both sides centres. Numeric columns read far better right aligned, which is worth setting even though most people leave it default. Padding each column to a consistent width does not change how the table renders, but it makes the source diff readable, which matters when the table lives in a repository and gets reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it detect the delimiter automatically?

Yes. Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe are all detected from the first few lines, which covers data copied out of Excel, Google Sheets and most exports. You can override the choice if the guess is wrong.

How are pipe characters inside cells handled?

They are escaped with a backslash, which is the only form Markdown table renderers accept. Without escaping, a cell containing a pipe splits into two columns and the row breaks.

What happens to a cell containing a newline?

Markdown tables cannot hold a line break, so the newline is converted to a break tag, which renders correctly on GitHub and most static site generators, or flattened to a space if you prefer plain output.

Can I set column alignment?

Yes, per column. Right alignment is worth applying to numeric columns because it lines up the digits, which makes a table of figures far easier to scan.

Does padding change how it renders?

No. Extra spaces inside the cells are ignored by every renderer. Padding exists purely so the raw Markdown lines up in a text editor and produces a readable diff.
